This is an updateable recommendation page, not a course article — it includes models, prices, and comparisons that should be reassessed roughly every 6 months (last checked 2026-09-07). It does not re-evaluate this course’s OBS-first architecture, only whether an ATEM Mini Pro is worth adding as a hardware switcher in front of it at the two-camera (GROW2) stage, and which ATEM Mini model would fit.

When a Hybrid Is Worth Considering

OBS’s own scene switching is enough for most two-camera systems — it is this course’s default route at the GROW2 stage, and there is no need to change it just because an alternative exists. An ATEM Mini Pro is worth bringing into consideration when either of the following holds: the church wants the feel of a physical switching panel (a button to press, not a mouse click), or running two separate capture devices at once on the same computer raises concern about USB bandwidth. The ATEM Mini Pro takes in both cameras as a single HDMI switcher and feeds the computer only one, already-switched picture — the computer and OBS stay completely unchanged in the system, including song lyrics and other OBS graphics. This one picture is brought into the computer in one of two ways: through the ATEM’s own built-in USB webcam output straight into the computer’s USB port (OBS sees the ATEM as a webcam, and no separate capture card is needed at all), or from the ATEM’s HDMI program output through a separate HDMI capture device. The first way is simpler and cheaper, since it removes the need for a capture card entirely — worth taking into account in the hybrid’s total cost.

Prices are based on the US-dollar list price checked on Blackmagic Design’s own international product page on 2026-09-07 — this product is rarely sold at a significant discount or at a country-specific price, but the local retailer price, taxes, and duties vary by country.

Both models also come in an ISO version (Pro ISO, Extreme ISO G2), which records each camera separately for post-production. This is a useful extra feature if the church wants to edit the recordings later, but it is not needed for a plain live GROW2 broadcast — the base model is enough for this purpose.

In practice, for the two cameras of the GROW2 stage, the ATEM Mini Pro is a clearly sufficient and justified option. The Extreme model’s 8 HDMI inputs and more powerful keying go largely unused when the system has only two cameras — buying it is worth timing for when production genuinely grows to more simultaneous sources.

The Audio-Input Limitation

The ATEM Mini, Mini Pro, and the regular Mini Extreme (the desktop model compared here) all receive audio through the same two unbalanced 3.5mm mini-jacks — despite the “Extreme” name, the Extreme also uses this same connector, not XLR. Since the church mixer’s aux output is typically balanced XLR or TRS, this does not prevent using either model, but it requires a small, level-attenuating adapter cable — the same limitation described in more detail alongside the audio-interface recommendation (see U6). A genuine XLR/TRS combo input with phantom power is found only in the much more expensive, rack-style ATEM Mini Extreme ISO G2, and for the two cameras of the GROW2 stage, that is not a justified purchase for the audio input alone.

Decision Tree: Is ATEM Worth It at This Stage?

  • Has OBS’s scene switching felt reliable and simple enough in a two-camera test setup? If yes, the ATEM Mini Pro does not bring enough extra benefit to justify the added cost — stay with the OBS-first model.
  • Is the concern specifically about the simultaneous load of two capture devices on the same computer, or is a physical switching button wanted for the live situation? If yes, the ATEM Mini Pro is a justified addition — it does not require giving up OBS’s graphics, since the computer and OBS remain unchanged in the chain after the ATEM.
  • Is more than two simultaneous video sources needed, or more complex keying/DVE functionality? Only at that point do the Extreme model’s extra inputs and processing power become justified — not at the GROW2 level.
  • Is connecting audio through an adapter cable an acceptable extra step? If not, and a balanced XLR input without adaptation matters, this favors either the much more expensive ATEM Mini Extreme ISO G2 or keeping the audio interface as part of the OBS route instead of the ATEM — the regular Extreme does not solve this, because its audio input is the same as the Pro’s.

Once these questions have been worked through, the choice between OBS’s built-in scene switching and the ATEM Mini Pro hybrid is ultimately a matter of preference between two working routes, not a technical necessity in either direction.
