This is an updateable recommendation page, not a course article — it includes device models, prices, and comparisons, and should be revisited roughly every 6 months as they change. It does not cover choosing camera 1 — see U3 for that.
Once the first camera is established and the church is ready to expand (see “When Does a Second Camera Pay Off?”), camera 2’s technical choice is not as clear-cut as camera 1’s. Here, two of the project’s specialists — the AV specialist and the video producer — did not arrive at the same recommendation, and this page presents both routes as genuine options. Neither is “wrong” — they suit different situations, and the right choice depends above all on whether the church needs camera 2 to be movable or a fixed installation is enough.
Route A is a camcorder from the same manufacturer family — the example model is the Panasonic HC-V180K — the same device class and operating principle as camera 1. Route B is a flexible budget PTZ/conference camera (for example a Tenveo- or SZOOMSY-type model), which is remotely controllable and easier to move from one occasion to another, but works on different control logic and generally costs more.
Price note (international, not tied to one country): the Panasonic HC-V380, previously mentioned on this page, appears to have genuinely been discontinued — Panasonic’s current new camcorder models (HC-V900, HC-VX3) replace different models (HC-V800, HC-VX1), not the V380. However, the same manufacturer family still has an actively sold option suited to this role: the Panasonic HC-V180K (28mm wide angle, 50x optical zoom, AC adapter included as standard, Mini-HDMI output), estimated at a price possibly even lower than the V380’s (under 240 USD / an equivalent EUR level). [UPDATE REQUIRED: confirm the HC-V180K’s price and availability in your own market before publishing.] Tenveo-type 12x budget-PTZ cameras were, at the time of this check, available directly from the manufacturer’s online store and from retailers for roughly 360–400 USD, but local availability, import costs, and warranty terms vary by market. The Decision Criterion: Is Movability Needed?
The practical question that most often settles the choice of route is simple: does camera 2 only need to serve the standard Sunday setup from one fixed spot, or should the same camera also be used for other occasions from a different angle — for example weddings, special events, or situations where the stage layout changes week to week?
If the answer is “a fixed spot is enough,” Route A is this course’s default choice. It is cheaper, and because it is from the same manufacturer family as camera 1, the picture and color difference stays smaller precisely when camera 2 is used the most — during worship music, when the lighting is often more atmospheric and differences between sensors show up more easily. The PTZ camera’s main advantage, remote re-framing, is largely unused in this situation, because camera 2’s role is defined as a fixed overall shot.
If the answer is “yes, we need flexibility,” Route B is a justified choice despite costing more and carrying a color-consistency risk. In that case, two things are worth doing deliberately at setup: lock both cameras’ white balance manually to the same reference before every broadcast instead of leaving it on automatic, and test the cut between the cameras in advance specifically under dimmer lighting — not only under bright preaching-time lighting, where differences show up least. Also agree in advance on who builds the PTZ presets and who knows how to adjust them again if the stage layout changes or the original person is no longer available — otherwise a flexible camera can turn into a new key-person risk instead of reducing one.
Neither route is optically insufficient: both model types cover the typical placement distances for camera 2. The choice is therefore above all a question of need and budget, not a technical necessity.
